I spent a week memorizing the relevant book and then flew to France to take my Peniche prive exam and practical test on a 24 metre barge in March 2006 -- and it was COLD! Cambrai, near Lille in North Eastern France, is a delightful town, just the size I like. I stayed in a small, cozy hotel near the locks and went for early morning walks along the tow-paths, the air, crisp in the frozen landscape. The main canal didn't freeze, but on shallow spurs and in places where there was no movement, the surface of the water looked distinctly sticky.

It is nice to be properly qualified, but, as it happens, we eventually decided to buy a replica barge under 15 metres, (14.95m in fact) and the more onerous PP qualification isn't needed for vessels under 15 metres. This barge is cheaper and easier to maintain than a larger one. It and all its systems are modern and lightly-used, and it is easier to sell when needed, as a potential purchaser can operate it with a lesser, and much easier to gain, license.
